Driver School Info Brief

Audi Badger Chapter Driver’s Safety Seminar at Road America

Our ‘Welcome Packet’, is loaded with information for new participants and for veteran drivers. There’s a link to it on the main page. Be sure to read all of it!

The event starts on Sunday afternoon the 8th of August, with registration, car tech, and a light buffet dinner at the Oshoff Resort in Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin (provided free with your entry). Then there are mandatory orientation meetings for the drivers and our 40-50 instructors.

Monday the 9th starts with a quick participants’ meeting, then classroom for beginners and intermediate drivers … (classroom continues off and on throughout the two days).

You will be assigned an instructor to ride with you for the entire event except in the exercises and the classroom. The rest of the morning will be taken up by exercises for you, led by our instructor staff. They will show you threshold braking techniques, side-to-side weight transfer in a slalom exercise, and an accident avoidance exercise.

In the afternoon, you will go out onto the track. Your instructor will first drive you around a few laps of RA in your car to show you the line and acquaint you with the track. Instructors drive you at a reasonable and quite reduced speed, as they want you to learn from the orientation. Then, you will begin driving the entire track with your instructor coaching you the entire time. Beginners should not expect to drive “solo” for their first couple events, especially at a track such as Road America with 14 turns over 4 miles, and several very fast and potentially dangerous corners.

Monday evening will bring our banquet, and a time to socialize with all of the other drivers and instructors from all over the US and some from Canada. The banquet is also provided free for you at the Osthoff as a paid participant. Guest dinners are extra, but not out of line for the great 4 or so course meal. Our sponsors always have cool Audi related items to give away in our raffle. We’ll draw the prizewinners after dinner.

Usually, we give each participant a neat memento, or gift, from the event to remember the experience. Last year we gave a trunk caddy that holds all kinds of things that usually roll around in the trunk. In other years, we gave an Audi Badger Chapter fleece car blanket, or a very high quality helmet bag with the Audi Club NA logo. These gifts are also free to you as a participant.

Tuesday the 10th, you will have classroom potentially interspersed with a mystery exercise, and lots of time on the track to hone your skills.

I hope to see you there!
